How Gabriel Guzmán’s Creative Journey Began

Gabriel’s interest in art began through illustrated books and comics. These early visual stories introduced him to the power of images to create worlds, communicate ideas and stay with an audience long after the page is turned.

During high school, he discovered graphic design and illustration, finding a creative path that connected storytelling with visual communication.

Gabriel later developed his practice at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, commonly known as UNAM, where he specialised in illustration and became deeply immersed in Mexico City’s vibrant artistic culture.

That education and environment helped shape a multidisciplinary practice rooted in cultural observation, experimentation and public engagement.

Creating Art with Community and Cultural Meaning

Gabriel’s murals are not simply large illustrations placed on walls. They become part of the neighbourhoods, streets and public environments where people live.

By working at this scale, he can create art that is accessible outside traditional galleries and invite communities to engage with visual ideas in their everyday surroundings.

Public Accessibility

Murals allow people to encounter artwork freely as part of daily life rather than only within formal cultural institutions.

Community Connection

Public art can create shared experiences and give residents a new way to connect with familiar places.

Cultural Storytelling

Gabriel’s work reflects Mexican visual culture while exploring ideas that can resonate across different communities.

Transforming Environments

Colour, scale and symbolism can change how people experience a wall, building or public space.

Staying Consistent While Continuing to Evolve

One of Gabriel’s ongoing challenges is remaining consistent in both his message and visual voice while continuing to learn and experiment.

A recognisable artistic identity takes time to develop, especially when an artist works across several mediums and types of projects.

Gabriel stays grounded by trusting his instincts, asking others for thoughtful feedback and remaining open to new lessons and creative approaches.

Consistency does not mean repeating the same work—it means carrying your values and perspective into every new direction.

What Is Next for Gabriel Guzmán?

Gabriel hopes to continue expanding his public art practice and creating work that strengthens the relationship between art, place and community.

  • More murals across Mexico: Gabriel plans to bring his work to additional cities and public environments throughout the country.
  • International mural projects: he hopes to collaborate with communities and creative organisations beyond Mexico.
  • Public art with purpose: future projects will continue using visual storytelling to encourage connection and reflection.
  • Continued experimentation: illustration, design and motion graphics will remain part of his evolving multidisciplinary practice.

Gabriel’s Advice for Other Artists and Makers

Believe in your work. Be consistent with your message. Stay true to your voice, seek feedback and never stop learning. That is what makes your art truly yours.
  • Believe in your work: confidence gives you the courage to keep developing an idea before others fully understand it.
  • Be consistent with your message: clear values can help different projects feel connected even when the formats change.
  • Protect your artistic voice: inspiration and feedback should strengthen your perspective rather than replace it.
  • Seek constructive feedback: trusted observations can reveal opportunities to communicate more clearly and improve your craft.
  • Never stop learning: curiosity keeps an artistic practice flexible, relevant and open to new possibilities.

Turning Surreal Artwork into Collectible Merchandise

Illustrators and mural artists can transform characters, symbols and small details from larger compositions into merchandise that allows audiences to carry part of the artwork with them.

Enamel pins are especially effective for bold surreal imagery, cultural symbols and graphic elements that can be simplified into memorable collectible designs.
